Michell
fig. 01 · lifestyle

John Michell's engineering shop in Borehamwood, England built the spaceship models for Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey before it built turntables, and the GyroDec's suspended, gyroscope-like design still shows that space-age eye. Founded in 1966, the company introduced the record clamp in 1977 and the GyroDec in the early 1980s. It's family-run today, with John's daughters at the helm, and every deck is hand-assembled in Hertfordshire. Old GyroDecs get serviced, upgraded, and kept spinning. That's the whole philosophy: build it once, build it right.
