Velodyne has meant subwoofers since 1983, when engineer David Hall founded the company in California and shipped the ULD-18, a sub with an accelerometer mounted on its cone. The servo system read the cone's motion and corrected it in real time, cutting distortion 20 to 30 times below competitors. Velodyne holds 197 patents. Since 2019 the brand has been owned by Audio Reference and run from Hamburg, Germany, with current models from the compact MicroVee X to the SPL-X line.
